Race Day

“Hit the mark, hit the mark, hit the mark”, Hawke repeats to herself quickly, as she brakes hard-- decelerating into the pit stop.  “Yes,” she exclaimed with pride as the formula-1 lurches to a stop dead center on the X, allowing the pit crew to surround the car efficiently!

Within seconds jacks lift the vehicle fully off of the street, and the metallic ziiiiip sound of impact wrenches fill the air as three pit crew members per wheel rapidly change out all the tires.  Four more mechanics address miscellaneous maintenance, including cleaning the windscreen and hydrating the driver.

Less than five seconds later Abigail is jolted as the car drops back onto the pavement, and the lead mechanic screams, “Go, Go, Go, as he pounds the back of the car with his open palm!

Hawke jams her foot down on the accelerator pedal hard, and the gee forces pull her back into her seat as the electromagnetic engine launches the car forward.  “Horsepower sells cars, but torque wins races,” Hawke thinks as she works through the gearbox’s seven gears, rejoining the competition.

The pedals are a lot more work than a regular automobile though.  By the end of the race she knows she is going to be sore, and that she is going to sleep well tonight.  But she has also come to realize that the pedals are the heart of the car, and almost as important in controlling it as the steering wheel.   She is making some significantly tight turns with minimal movement of the wheel, efficiently using the accelerator, clutch, and brake.

It is noisy.  It is hot.  It is grueling.  Abigail Hawke is having more fun than she has had in a very long time.  “I’m going to have to rub it in good, next time I see Forbin,” she thinks.

Despite the speed of her car, Paudraic’s Getaway Resort seems to go by in slow motion, so sharp is Hawke’s focus. 

The competition is stiff, and it is truly anybody's race at this point, Hawke realizes.  But she is becoming more and more aware just how competitive she really is at this stage of the contest. The heads up display on her helmet's visor shows all of the XL-3's vital functions.  The car is running beautifully.  Everything is in perfect balance.  Perfect harmony.  Hotrod knows how to put the performance in Performance Tuning. 


"I actually have a shot at winning this thing," she thinks, a slight smile finding it's way to her face.
